Irrigation by crop
Irrigation for bengal gram
A rabi crop sown into stored soil moisture in October and November. One or two light irrigations lift the yield; a heavy one can ruin it.
Suits it best
Rain pipe
Usual row spacing
0.3 m
Water need
3.5–5 mm/day
Water need is the crop’s daily use at full cover over Dec–Jan, at weather stations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — the spread is the season and the place.
Why rain pipe
Sown at 30 cm and short, like groundnut. Chickpea wants a light watering at flowering and pod fill, never a flood — rain pipe wets the strip without waterlogging it.
Rain pipe lines 5 m apart, each wetting a strip 5–6 m wide.
What actually changes the answer
- Sown at 30 × 10 cm, as close as groundnut, so rain pipe wets the strip the same way.
- Chickpea hates wet feet. Water lightly and never let it stand — too much brings root rot and leafy growth at the expense of pods.
- Flowering and pod fill are the two stages worth an irrigation in a dry winter.

Spacings and layouts on this page are published package-of-practice and state-scheme figures; water need is FAO-56’s crop-coefficient method on published Telangana and Andhra Pradesh weather records. Neither is a design for your field — soil, slope, water source and pump all move them. Send us your crop, acres and pump details and we’ll confirm the sizing before you commit.
