Irrigation by crop

Irrigation for turmeric

Seven to nine months on raised beds, through the monsoon and into the new year. One drip lateral down each bed waters the rhizomes without the waterlogging that rots them.

Usual row spacing

0.3–0.45 m

Water need

3.5–6.5 mm/day

Water need is the crop’s daily use at full cover over Aug–Nov, at weather stations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — the spread is the season and the place.

Why drip irrigation

Seven to nine months on raised beds. A lateral down each bed waters the rhizomes without the waterlogging that rots them.

Inline drip laterals 1.5 m apart, one down each raised bed.

What actually changes the answer

  • TNAU’s layout is raised beds 1.2 m wide and 30 cm apart, a lateral at the centre of each — laterals 1.5 m apart.
  • Rhizome rot spreads in standing water, so the beds matter as much as the drip.
  • No measured crop coefficient for turmeric is published. Its water figure uses FAO-56’s range for full-cover vegetable crops — treat it as a starting point.

What you’d be buying

Spacings and layouts on this page are published package-of-practice and state-scheme figures; water need is FAO-56’s crop-coefficient method on published Telangana and Andhra Pradesh weather records. Neither is a design for your field — soil, slope, water source and pump all move them. Send us your crop, acres and pump details and we’ll confirm the sizing before you commit.
