A rain irrigation system pushes water through a pump, LDPE mains and filters out to sprinklers that spread it like rainfall across the field. It suits larger farms, mixed cropping and monsoon-dependent land — but it isn’t the right answer everywhere, so it’s worth weighing honestly before you invest.

The trade-offs
- Higher upfront cost than traditional flood methods
- Depends on a reliable power supply for the pump
- Needs clean water and regular filter and sprinkler cleaning
- Loses more water to evaporation than drip does
- Not for crops that dislike wet foliage
Crops it suits
It’s a good match for paddy, maize, groundnut and soybean, moong and urad, and green fodder — broadly, the close-sown crops that benefit from even overhead coverage.
Installing it well
- Survey the site and soil before you buy anything
- Use good components — quality rain pipe and LDPE mains outlast cheap ones
- Clean filters and sprinklers on a schedule
- Watch soil moisture so you don’t over-irrigate
- Re-tune pressure and settings each season
