Before you buy

Does the HDPE side need a clamp as well?

Yes. The compression assembly grips the pipe on its own, provided the pipe is pushed fully home and the parts went on in the right order. A clamp added over the strong hold in high working pressure of water.

It weeps at the HDPE side under pressure.

Usually the pipe was not pushed fully to the stop, or the cut was not square. Depressurise, dismantle, re-cut square and reassemble — tightening harder on a badly seated pipe will not fix it.
