Deciding on drip for cotton is less about whether it works — it is the crop drip pays back fastest on here — and more about when that payback actually arrives, and which mistakes delay it. The answer is specific: the money comes from a handful of weeks, and the pitfalls come from how a cotton system gets bought and commissioned.

Why cotton repays the pipe fastest
Three things line up on cotton that no other field crop here matches. The rows are wide — 0.9 to 1.2 metres — so an acre needs less lateral than any close-sown crop, and the biggest line of the bill starts small. The season is long, so the pipe works for months per year, not weeks. And the crop is valuable enough that a modest yield gain covers a modest system.
And a fifth, small until picking week: drip wets the plant line and leaves the middles dry. A flooded field stops the pickers until it drains; a dripped one lets watering and picking share the same days, which matters through the two or three months cotton is harvested in flushes.
There is a fourth alignment people miss: the borewell. Watered by flood, a typical bore serves perhaps half an acre of cotton; on drip the same water stretches to roughly double the ground — the arithmetic is here, and cotton is its worked example. For a farmer whose land exceeds his water, drip is not a water-saving device; it is extra acres planted.
The weeks that decide the bales
Cotton drinks 4 to 6 mm a day at its peak, but the demand is not what makes irrigation decisive — the timing is. Through the vegetative months a rain-fed crop mostly shrugs off a dry fortnight. Let moisture stress land during flowering and boll formation, though, and squares and young bolls shed; the yield you lose in those stretches never comes back, whatever falls later.
That is why drip on cotton earns its keep even on farms that think of themselves as rain-fed. The system's job is steadiness through the decisive weeks — protective irrigation, scheduled by the soil rather than the sky. Drip for cotton: the sizes and grades that survive it
The lateral is 16 mm across the range; the wall is the real choice, and cotton's season makes it. The 0.4 mm flat lateral at ₹6.73 a metre is the working floor — this crop stands through the hottest months while workers walk every row at each picking, and a trodden, sun-baked line must take it. The ₹3.96 thin tape belongs on quick vegetable crops; under cotton it is a bet the costing article prices honestly.
One measuring warning, because it moves a third of the bill: 0.9 metre rows need roughly a third more lateral than 1.2 metre rows on the same acre. Measure ten row-gaps and divide before ordering — the costing article shows the same trap from the price side.
Emitter-fitted pipe does the watering; everything else follows the pump, not the crop. Mainline bore, head fittings and the non-return valve are sized from the outlet — the pump-to-lateral walk-through lists that chain with prices, so nothing surfaces missing on installation day.

The dry-commissioning pitfall
Here is the failure unique to cotton's calendar. Pre-monsoon sowing means the system usually goes in dry — trenches cut, laterals unrolled, fittings made up, weeks before the first real irrigation. All that installation shifts soil, and some of it ends up inside brand-new pipe.
The fix costs nothing: before the first proper irrigation, open every lateral's end and run the pump until each line flushes clear, then cap and pressurise. And filter from day one — we say it every time and stock none ourselves: no filter we sell, so put one in the budget beside the pipe, because a cotton season is long enough to find every weakness in unfiltered water.
Then the first watering arrives at the crop's first thirst, pushes every gram of trench grit down the lines, and parks it in the smallest openings on the system: the emitters. A brand-new installation blocks like a neglected one, and the owner concludes drip does not work.
Buy it once, buy it measured
